The history of RAF Podington

RAF Podington (USAAF Station 109) was a vital frontline heavy bomber base in Bedfordshire, England, that played a major role in the Allied victory during World War II. From 1943 to 1945, this airfield was the permanent combat home of the historic 92nd Bombardment Group, known as "Fame’s Favoured Few," who flew 274 gruelling missions over occupied Europe in their B-17 Flying Fortresses.

To safeguard thousands of personnel from Axis air raids, the military constructed 12 highly dispersed living and administrative sites hidden in the surrounding countryside. Among these, Site 3 was specifically built as the dedicated Officers’ Quarters and Communal Site, housing the base’s pilots, squadron leaders, and tactical planners in rugged Nissen huts.

From its notorious runway limitations and experimental secret weapon testing to its post-war transformation into a Polish refugee camp and its modern rebirth as Europe’s premier drag strip (Santa Pod Raceway), this is the complete history of RAF Podington and the hidden remnants of Site 3.
